The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is headed to the windy city of Chicago this weekend for some Saturday night racing. However, Saturday night's race at the 1.5 mile tri-oval is a far cry from the races NASCAR used to run at Soldier Field in the 1950's. In the mid 50's, Glen and Leonard Wood (Leonard Wood pictured to the left) and a handful of NASCAR regulars would come to Chicago to compete at the 0x00bd mile paved track at Soldier Field (click here for related article -- "Glen Wood 57 win"). The Wood Brothers competed in three of the races with Glen Wood winning the last NASCAR race at Soldier Field in 1957.

With positive ties to Chicago's racing past and strong runs at Lowe's Motor Speedway and Michigan International Speedway, the Wood Brothers and Bill Elliott are looking forward to bringing the #21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend.

The Wood Brothers have competed in all 8 Sprint Cup races held at Chicagoland Speedway earning their best finish (7th) in 2005 with Ricky Rudd behind the wheel. Former NASCAR Champion Bill Elliott has competed in 6 of the 8 Chicagoland Sprint Cup races finishing in the top ten twice.

Teams will take to the track on Thursday, July 9th for practice and qualifying with two practices scheduled for Friday, July 10th. The race is scheduled for Saturday night, July 11th, with live trackside coverage beginning at 7:30 pm EST on TNT.
