Shepherd To Attempt 500th Start

Hickory, N.C. July 7, 2004- Morgan Shepherd, the 62 year old NASCAR Nextel Cup veteran, will attempt to qualify for the Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Should he take the green flag, Shepherd will make his 500th start.

Reaching a career milestone of this nature is something many drivers can only hope to achieve. Shepherd takes it all in stride.

"Yeah, that's pretty exciting," said Shepherd. "I'm 62 years old. Most people couldn't drive a race car at my age. But, I do try to eat well and I get plenty of exercise."

That exercise includes roller skating when time allows. Shepherd is quite accomplished when he steps into those skates and loves to perform and dance when given the opportunity.

Regarding his career, Shepherd takes a more humble tone, realizing his ability to continue on is a gift from the Lord.

"I'm excited. It's been a wonderful career," said Shepherd. "I've been blessed to have driven for some great owners. I just thank the Lord for his many blessings and as long as He wants me to, I'll continue racing."

In a long and storied career, Shepherd has seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Yet, he continues to move forward, answering only to a higher authority.

The independent owner and driver, does virtually all of the race preparation himself.

"I'm just trying to get the car ready (for Chicago) and hope we can make the race."
