Harvick returns as two-time defending titlist

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 8, 2003) -- The smart money is on Kevin Harvick this week. No way around that, considering how well Harvick knows his way around Chicagoland Speedway.

There have been two previous NASCAR Winston Cup Series races at Chicagoland. Harvick has won them both.

"I wish I knew [why I've won both]; then I wouldn't tell anybody," joked Harvick (No. 29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet). "No, it's just one of those places -- Bristol's another one -- where something clicks with the way I drive. When we unloaded the first time, it fit my driving style for whatever reason."

That was especially evident last season when Harvick recovered from a spinout 67 laps from the finish that moved him back into the pack.

"There's a good story in that," Harvick said. "Something for the fans to pay attention to. If someone goes out and kicks the field's butt all day long and ends up winning by a straightaway, nobody really remembers what happened.

"That was really the only thing that people remember -- me spinning out in the grass and coming back to win that race. I'll take them either way (easily or difficult) but from a fan and racer's perspective, if you come back from a lap down or win one by two inches, it's more exciting."
