CONCORD, N.C. (May 16, 1997) The following are selected driver quotes after qualifying for The Winston Open at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
CHAD LITTLE No. 97 John Deere Pontiac
"The car felt pretty good when we unloaded it off the trailer. It got a little loose in (Turn) 2, but I was able to collect it and get in a good lap.
"The car was a little bit loose getting into Turn 3, but luckily it wasn't enough so I had to get out of the gas. We tightened the car up a little bit after the last practice session. It was loose then. We discussed then whether we should tighten it up or not because cooler weather dictates a little tighter car, but they made the right decision. The tightened it up a little and it worked out for the best. It was really a pretty good lap. I think I could have gotten into Turn 3 a little better because I was a little loose there. All in all, it was a pretty good lap."
LAKE SPEED No. 9 Melling Ford
"Charlotte has been a good track for us. It's our home track and we have a good car for tomorrow night. We have had a fast car here and have always tried to be conservative and get in the top five, like we did in 1995. This will change our strategy some, with only one position open. You can't be conservative. You have got to race now."
RICKY CRAVEN No. 25 Budweiser Chevrolet
"We're making progress. It was important for us to come back here. This is where we kind of marked it on the schedule that we needed to do good in this event and next weekend, as well. So we're pretty happy with this today. This was a lot better than what we were doing in practice. I always try to keep something in reserve. This kind of shows I'm back to my old form.
WALLY DALLENBACH No. 46 First Union Chevrolet
"When we went to make our simulated qualifying run, the 78 car wrecked right in front of us, so we really didn't know what we'd be able to do. As early as we went out, it was a pretty good run for us. These guys are giving me the best cars I've ever had, but this is one of my least favorite cars and we still did okay. We feel good about tomorrow night. It'll be a lot of fun."
ROBERT PRESSLEY No. 29 Cartoon Network Chevrolet
"We were good in practice. Our car has been good, and it's comfortable here. Charlotte has been kind of funny for us in Winston Cup. I had some success here in the Busch races, but the Winston Cup deal has been a little up and down, so this is a good run for us. We have a car that I know would get us in the top five, if they still took that many positions. But, with only one, I know we have a good car. We are as good as any car out there and have a good chance to win it."
