CONCORD, N.C. (May 16, 1997) The following are selected driver quotes after qualifying for The Winston at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

BILL ELLIOTT No. 94 McDonald's Ford

"I just kept thinking, to make every second count...every corner...I tried to get down pit road ... try to get in your pit stall...try to get out. It all worked out. I just couldn't believe it. When they flashed my number on the board I couldn't believe it. (Hugging pit wall) was planned. I was going to make every second count so the guys wouldn't have to go so far, and it all worked out. The pit crew practiced every day this week and they did a heck of a job. I tried to run as good a first lap that I could. When I went back out and made my second lap and looked up, it all worked out. Everything went flawless tonight. We just went on past experience. You have those days that it all works out and some days it don't. This means a lot to this team and for McDonald's We need everything we can get to pump us up. We're continuing to build and with a little bit of luck we can get there."

DALE EARNHARDT No. 3 GM Goodwrench/Wheaties Chevrolet

"The guys did a great job on pit road. I think our lap could have been even better. The pit crew was the reason we were where we were. We ran a decent lap, but I think we were a little slow going down pit road. It was fair, but it wasn't the greatest. Larry McReynolds and the team need something good to happen. Starting second isn't bad. That's a far cry from where we've been qualifying, but still, it was a team effort. It was the crew and driver and car."

STERLING MARLIN No. 4 Kodak Film Chevrolet

"I made a lot of time coming into the pits. I didn't think it was going to stop. We just did get it stopped. That's a lot of fun. The sun was pretty bad. It really hits you in the eyes coming off Turn 3. The crew did a great job. I guess we got beat a little on the pit stop. We gave it all we had, and that's all we can do."

MICHAEL WALTRIP No. 21 Citgo Ford

"It was a great pit stop and a great effort by everybody. Anytime you stop where you're supposed to, you think you could have gone in there a little quicker. I wanted to get in there a little quicker. I wished I had of. I'm real proud of the whole team. I wish I could have got them the pole. The pole here is a combination of the driver getting on pit road and the pit stop being good, and we had one of the best pit stops."

BOBBY LABONTE No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet

"I think our laps were good, a little loose. Looser than I thought it would be, but it really wasn't all that bad. Entering pit road I think I was probably a little conservative because I needed to be after what happened earlier today. It was okay. The guys did a great job in the pit. If you don't sit on the pole here it really doesn't matter because that's the only thing that pays. Going first has its advantages and disadvantages. That gives the other guys something to shoot at. They can try and figure out where to beat me. It might be an advantage that I didn't go out and watch them and do something else and screw up."

JEFF GORDON No. 24 DuPont/Jurassic Park Chevrolet

"It's a shame. I really got off the race track fast, and I think I had a pretty good first lap. I locked the right front up and I could never get it to stop. I knew there was no way I was going to make it stop. I tried as hard as I could, but you go for broke in this deal. We might be starting in the back in the first segment, but we're going to be there for the last segment, I'll guarantee you. We made it last year and we didn't quite make it this year. I thought we could get it slowed down with new tires on it, but I locked the right front as soon as I came on to pit road and I just slid right through."
