Mayfield, Spencer roll in No Bull 25s By Shawn A. Akers
CONCORD, N.C. (May 15, 1998) Jeremy Mayfield and Jimmy Spencer dominated their respective No Bull 25 qualifying races Friday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, setting the field for Saturday night's Winston Open at the 1.5-mile superspeedway.
Mayfield, starting from the No. 1 position in the first 25-lap qualifying race, led from the drop of the green flag to the checkered flag, beating Johnny Benson to the finish by 2.59 seconds. The driver of the No. 12 Mobil 1 Ford Taurus currently leads the NASCAR Winston Cup Series point standings and will start on the front row beside Spencer in
the Winston Open. "This is a good way to get this started," Mayfield said. "We needed that checkered flag, and when I saw it fall, I told these guys, 'It's about time we've seen one because we've come up short all year long and we just wanted to get a little bit of a win anyway.'
"We've got a great car here. This Mobil 1 Ford has been good. We had a fast time. Got to sit on the pole and won this thing. There's no reason why we can't come back tomorrow night and do the same thing."
Mike Skinner finished third in the first No Bull 25, followed by Wally Dallenbach and Kyle Petty.
Spencer, in the Team Winston/No Bull No. 23 Ford Taurus, took the lead from Joe Nemechek on the very first lap of the second No Bull 25, and was never passed, beating Ward Burton to the finish line by 0.396 seconds.
"The guys have worked hard all winter long, and it's paying off this year," Spencer said. "We're eighth in Winston Cup points and this is a big event for us. I've been in it before and we need a win to get into this thing (The Winston), so we won one segment and now we've got to try and win that 50-lapper (the Winston Open).
"Jeremy was tough in his first one, and Johnny Benson held back a little bit. I think it's going to be a heckuva race tomorrow night. The best man is gonna win and he's gonna go to The Winston."
Nemechek finished third in the second race, followed by Dick Trickle and Hut Stricklin.
The winner of the Winston Open will get the final spot in Saturday night's The Winston.
