CHARLOTTE (May 25, 2003) - Mike Wallace drove the No. 01 U.S. Army Pontiac to a 31st place finish Sunday in the rain-shortened Coca-Coca 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

The scheduled 400-lap, 600-mile race was called on lap 276 when rain once again hit the 1.5-mile speedway. An earlier rain shower (lap 107) also forced NASCAR officials to red flag the race for approximately 25 minutes.

Wallace, who is substituting for the injured Jerry Nadeau, started 43rd and did not get the early jump he was hoping for.

"For some reason we weren't right in the beginning and got off to a slow start," said Wallace. "But the guys made some good adjustments as the race went on and we started to pick up our lap speeds. The finish is by no means what we wanted -- we expected the performance to be better than what it was.

"I am not happy with my performance - the first stop I made a major error by driving past our pit stall. I had to back up and get back in the box. That probably cost us to lose another lap."

Wallace was never better than 40th for the first half of the race, but did pick up nine positions during the second half.

"We were improving and that's a good sign," commented Wallace. "We kept on digging and never got discouraged. This is a tough team and I am happy to be part of it."

Wallace and the U.S. Army team will be in Dover, Del. next week for the MBNA Armed Forces Family 400.
