New Rules for Daytona? NASCAR plans to require teams to run a smaller front bumper -- with six inches of ground clearance instead of the current 3 1/2 -4 inches -- and a smaller rear spoiler -- 4 inches instead of the current 5 1/2 -6 inches. One purpose is to make the cars more difficult to drive, in order to split the one big drafting train into smaller packs. Another purpose is to allow engine men to use larger restrictor plates, to give drivers more throttle response. But NASCAR is now looking at requiring teams to run small plates at Daytona in July, because the smaller rear spoiler would make for faster one-lap speeds.

Danny Lawrence, Dale Earnhardt's engine man, says that such an engine would be a surprise: ''Smaller restrictor plates at Daytona? That's the first I've heard about it, and I sure hope they don't do that.'' And Robin Pemberton, the crew chief for Rusty Wallace, said he's not sure NASCAR will make any changes at all: ''I've never heard anything about it.''
