Ken Schrader Celebrates 50th Birthday on Sunday at Charlotte
CONCORD, N.C. -- Driver of the #49 Schwan's Home Service dodge, Ken Schrader turned 50 years old Sunday, and in doing so, becamethe first over 50, Nextel Cup regular since Darrell Waltrip and Dave Marcis during the 2000 season.
Still the busiest driver in major league motorsports, Schrader runs in excess of 100 races annually and over the course of his career has ran competed over 310 different tracks throughout nation.
All weekend, fans have been able to stop by the Schwan's Home Service display outside the Lowe's Motor Speedway and sign a giant birthday card that will be delivered to Schrader after the race weekend. Hundreds of signatures were collected from fans who live all over the country.
Also, Sunday afternoon, to commemorate the event, the Schwan's Home Service crew presented Schrader with a homemade Schwan's Racing wheelchair, constructed from spare parts from around the race shop.
...and the birthday boy?
"For me, it's really just another day," Schrader grinned. "It's a milestone I can't do anything about -- and I don't think it's the kind of thing you want to miss. . . you know, the ol' 'Oh man, hate that happened the day before he turned 50' and everybody talks about you in the past tense . . ."
"The guy at the drive-through this morning said I had to be 55 to get a discount on the coffee, but it sure does make motel rates cheaper," Schrader laughed. "Seriously, I've been able to do what I love for a long time, and hopefully I'll be able to race for many years to come."
