RIGGS FINISHES 33RD IN CHARLOTTE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Oct. 15, 2005)--Scott Riggs finished 33rd in Saturday night's UAW-GM Quality 500 here at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
"It was an up and down night for the Valvoline team," explained Riggs, who started the event 15th. "Our No. 10 Chevy was a little loose at the beginning of the race and we fell back through the field quite a bit. The guys kept making air pressure adjustments to the car and it finally got feeling pretty good."
"We made a few two-tire stops to help with track position and found ourselves back up around fifteenth place," he continued. "I thought we'd be able to cycle our way around and get two tires at the end and put ourselves in position for a decent finish. But it didn't happen."
As the field rounded the 1.5-mile oval on Lap 253 of 336, the racecar of Elliott Sadler went spinning down the track. Riggs slowed to avoid the wreck but was unable to decelerate quickly enough and made contact with Mike Bliss's car.
"There was a wreck in front of us and I didn't slow down in time," explained Riggs. "I tried, but unfortunately I got into the back of Bliss' car and knocked in the fender of our Valvoline Chevy in. There was no geometrical or suspension damage -- just a lot of bent sheet metal."
Riggs drove the injured machine down pit road where the Valvoline team worked feverishly to repair the front end. A few laps later his right-front tire went flat and he slammed into the outside wall.
"We thought we had everything cleared off around the tire," said Riggs. "But something was still there. When we went back out on the racetrack, something cut the tire down. It sent us straight into the wall and ended our night."
"It was disappointing because we felt we were heading in the right direction to get a good finish," continued Riggs. "But Martinsville's up next. This Valvoline team took the pole position there in April and we hope to have an equally good effort next week."
Riggs and the Valvoline team will be at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway next Sunday, Oct. 16. The event will be broadcast live on NBC, beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.
