The fall race at Lowe's Motor Speedway shifts to Saturday night in 2003. Below are thoughts from Pontiac drivers Johnny Benson and Bobby Labonte, and crew chief Greg Zipadelli on running here tomorrow for the last time on a Sunday afternoon.
BOBBY LABONTE, NO. 18 INTERSTATE BATTERIES PONTIAC GRAND PRIX
"I think it's really cool. Saturday night races are really good for us right now because, with the way the schedule is, there are only three total weekends off from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. Another Sunday off definitely helps out. It may not sound like much, but another Sunday off is a big deal."
BECAUSE IT IS A SUNDAY OFF, DOES THAT MAKE IT MORE MEANINGFUL THAN IF IT WERE JUST A DAY OFF DURING THE WEEK? "Right. With my kids being in school - Monday through Friday they are in school unless it's a holiday. Sundays they're home. If I'm home and they're home, we can go to church, we can to church and do other things, we can go visit family and friends we don't get to see because their kids go to school, there is basketball, soccer, baseball at night - that whole deal.
"I think it's good. You won't find me at a racetrack on that Sunday after this race next year. A year from tomorrow this race will be over and it will be some good family time."
JOHNNY BENSON, NO. 10 VALVOLINE PONTIAC GRAND PRIX:
"I think it will be way cool. As long as we still come in on Thursday - or even come in on Friday - and run a Saturday night race it will be great.
"I think the fans will really like it. And, most of the local tracks around the country are closed by now, so it won't hurt that. On top of that, it gives us Sunday off and we can have friends and family that are in town visiting anyway - it gives us an opportunity to spend a quiet day with them. Man, I see nothing bus positives all the way around on that deal."
DO WE MAKE FOR A PRETTY GOOD SATURDAY NIGHT SPORT? "Oh yeah, absolutely. I believe we're a Sunday sport, also. I wouldn't want to see us go to all Saturday nights, but I'd take a few more."
GREG ZIPADELLI, NO. 20 HOME DEPOT PONTIAC GRAND PRIX:
"I think it's pretty cool. Going to Saturday night, we'll have Sunday off and we've got a day for rain.
"We've always run really well here during the day when it's kind of hot and slick. But, this is one of those places that's kind of neat to come to just because it's home, you know? It just draws so many people and so many fans for the whole week. Your really get to see and meet some die-hard race fans because they take their whole week's vacation and come down.
"Having that Sunday will be cool. It means another day on the lake, hopefully."
