Jeff Burton, No. 31 AT&T Mobility Monte Carlo SS met with media to discuss his current goals in the Chase, on the chances of catching Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson in the hunt for the title, evaluating his year, how running Late Models can prepare you for a career in NASCAR, and the key to winning at Martinsville.
Select quotes from driver interview:
ARE YOU FOCUSED ON NEXT YEAR AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT OR ARE YOU STILL THINKING YOU CAN WIN THIS TITLE? "Well, realistically it's pretty clear that we'd have to have a pretty odd set of circumstances to get ourselves in position to win the championship. But we have to act as if and do our job as if we still have a shot. You never know what can happen in any kind of sport and this is certainly one of the more volatile sports. We have to continue to work hard. There is a sense though, of getting ready for next year. There is a sense of making the most out of this year. Eighth in points is better than 12th. And sixth is better than eighth.
"So, we still have goals to try to meet. We want to win races and have a lot of things we want to do. But we're not looking real hard at points right now."
REALISTICALLY, DOES ANYONE OTHER THAN CLINT BOWYER OR TONY STEWART HAVE A CHANCE TO CATCH EITHER JIMMIE JOHNSON OR JEFF GORDON? "Oh, yeah, I think there is a realistic chance for sure. Anything can happen. It takes one wreck. It takes one blown engine, it takes one bad pit stop, it takes any one small thing to change the dynamic of this thing very quickly. There are a lot of people that still have a chance. And yeah, by no means to I believe it's a three or four-man race. I think it's way more than that."
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO LOOK BACK AT THIS SEASON? "I can't look back on it until it's over. I don't work like that. I have to have all the information in front of me to be able to look at what happened. So, if it ended right now, today, I would consider it to be somewhat of a disappointing year. But it's not going to end today. There is a whole lot more ahead of us and I can't make a judgment on what I feel like until I have all the information."
TALLADEGA IS CONSIDERED A WILD CARD RACE. IS MARTINSVILLE CONSIDERED A WILD CARD RACE AS WELL? "I think Martinsville is a wild card for sure. There are a lot of things that can happen at Martinsville that you don't anticipate at other race tracks. I think Martinsville is definitely one of those track that can have a huge impact on who wins this championship."
