No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet returns to track, driven by Childress.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 9, 2003) -- Saturday night will be especially memorable for NASCAR fans as the NASCAR Victory Lap tribute program makes its next stop at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. At this stop, the tribute honors the late, seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Dale Earnhardt and four-time champion Jeff Gordon on Saturday night prior to the UAW-GM Quality 500.

Earnhardt's long-time car owner and friend, Richard Childress, will drive the No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet in a tribute lap which will take place during the opening pace laps of the UAW-GM Quality 500.

Earnhardt won 76 races during his career. His seven championships is the all-time record, one shared by Richard Petty. After being named rookie of the year in 1979, Earnhardt edged Cale Yarborough for the 1980 NASCAR Winston Cup championship; Earnhardt remains the only driver to win those titles in successive years.

Earnhardt spent most of his life in his hometown of Kannapolis, N.C., just a short drive from Lowe's Motor Speedway. Growing up, he watched his father, Ralph, race in stock car events throughout the southeast, and soon developed a love and passion for the sport that would eventually make him a legend. Earnhardt consistently ran strong at LMS, with five career wins and 16 top-five finishes to his credit.

Jeff Gordon has achieved legendary status as well, with four NASCAR Winston Cup championships and 62 victories. Driving the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet for Rick Hendrick, Gordon picked up his first career win at Lowe's Motor Speedway at the 1994 Coca-Cola 600, in his second NASCAR Winston Cup season.

Gordon, who will drive the No. 24 DuPont/Victory Lap Chevrolet during the UAW-GM Quality 500, is in his 11th NASCAR Winston Cup season. He is sixth in the NASCAR Top 10 and will seek his second victory of the 2003 season on Saturday night.
