CBS Sports to Broadcast Pepsi 400 Live in Primetime Pepsi 400 Will Be First-Ever Primetime Network Broadcast of an Auto Race DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- CBS Sports and Daytona International Speedway will partner to make television history on July 4, 1998 when the 40th running of the Pepsi 400 will mark the first time a major network will broadcast an auto race live in primetime. "This is a breakthrough event in the history of NASCAR and Daytona International Speedway," said Sean McManus, president of CBS Sports. "As the leading broadcaster of NASCAR, we are excited to be able to showcase this watershed event. The addition of a live primetime race promises the largest possible platform for NASCAR as this sport continues to be one of the fastest growing television sports." "A NASCAR Winston Cup race at Daytona under the lights is sure to be one of the greatest spectacles in motorsports," said John Graham, president of Daytona International Speedway. "Each year, through the combination of huge television ratings and sold-out grandstands at the Speedway, the Daytona 500 enjoys the largest audience in motorsports. With the addition of lights, we expect the Pepsi 400 to be a very close second." Daytona International Speedway and Musco Lighting, Inc., put the finishing touches on the world's largest outdoor lighting project in late May. The process of adding enough light to properly illuminate the 2.5-mile trioval included 1,835 fixtures on 191 poles ranging from 70 to 110 feet in height. If broken down into residential street lighting, the Speedway's lighting project would brighten a two-lane residential street form Daytona Beach, Fla. to Musco's headquarters in Iowa. CBS Sports, which pioneered live flag-to-flag coverage of auto racing with the 1979 Daytona 500, will broadcast 15 NASCAR events in 1998 totaling more than 40 hours. Other events at the "World Center of Racing" which CBS Sports broadcasts include the Daytona 500, NAPA AUTO PARTS 300, Bud Shootout At Daytona, the Gatorade 125-Mile Qualifying Races for the Daytona 500 and starting in 1999 pole qualifying for the Daytona 500. Although grandstand seating is sold out for the 1998 Pepsi 400, other options available to fans wishing to experience "Daytona at the Speed of Light" include a limited number of reserved infield motorhome spaces good for three days admission and unreserved grandstand tickets good for admission to all of Thursday's and Friday's on-track action. Infield tickets for the entire weekend of racing will be available at the gate starting on Thursday, July 2.
