Reed Sorenson to Make NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Debut at Home Track in Atlanta
Busch Series Primary Discount Tire Co. to Sponsor
CONCORD, N.C. (September 13, 2005) --- Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates announced today that NASCAR Busch Series driver Reed Sorenson will make his NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series debut during the Oct. 31 race weekend at his home track of Atlanta Motor Speedway. Discount Tire Co., the primary sponsor of Sorenson's No. 41 Dodge in the Busch Series, will increase its support of the 19-year-old driver by serving as the sponsor on his No. 39 Dodge Charger.
"Discount Tire Company has been an integral part of our driver development program, and especially in the development of Reed this year in the Busch Series," said team owner Chip Ganassi. "It says a lot about Discount Tire as a company and as a partner that they want to support Reed as he ventures into the NEXTEL Cup Series."
In addition, Sorenson will attempt to qualify for the NEXTEL Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway in the No. 39 Discount Tire Dodge in November. The paint scheme that Sorenson will be running in Atlanta and Texas is also a sneak peek at what his No. 41 Discount Tire Dodge will look like for the 2006 NASCAR Busch Series season.
"As the Talent Development Sponsor of Chip Ganassi Racing and primary sponsor of the No. 41 Busch car, everyone at Discount Tire is very proud of Reed's success," Discount Tire VP of Advertising and Marketing Rob Wise said. "In appreciation of Reed, and our continued commitment to Reed's development, Discount Tire is happy to announce it will be the primary sponsor of Reed's NEXTEL Cup car for two starts this season. Reed will also continue to gain valuable seat time as the driver of the No. 41 Discount Tire Busch car in 2006. Our people are very excited about the rest of the 2005 Busch Series season as Reed runs for rookie of the year and the championship."
Discount Tire Company made its foray into racing in 2004 with its sponsorship of a CGRFS entry in the NASCAR Busch Series. After running eight races in 2004, Discount Tire expanded its sponsorship to a full season this year. Discount Tire will continue its support of Sorenson in the Busch Series in 2006.
"I am excited about running two Cup races this season," Sorenson said. "I am glad that my debut will be at my hometown track of Atlanta Motor Speedway. I always want to do well in front of the hometown crowd. I have a lot of friends and family members that come out to the track, and it is a track that has been instrumental in my career since I was a kid. Discount Tire Company has been a great sponsor, and I'm honored that the company wants to support me as I make the next step in my career into the NEXTEL Cup Series."
Reed Sorenson joined the CGRFS stable of drivers in 2003 when team owners Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates signed him as part of the CGRFS driver development program. In 2004, he ran three ARCA races and four Busch Series races for CGRFS, amassing one ARCA win at Michigan and four top-five and five top-10 finishes between the two series. So far this season, Sorenson has two wins, two pole positions, 10 top-five and 14 top-10 finishes and is second in the rookie of the year title race in the NASCAR Busch Series.
