TOPIC: Four of the five NEXTEL Cup Series races this month will end under the lights. We asked our drivers what they thought of night races:
Mark Martin, No. 6 Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate) Ford Taurus:
"From a competitor's standpoint, I don't think it makes a lot of difference, but I know that it's pretty exciting for the fans. There is something about the lights and the atmosphere, that adds a little something, and it always reminds me of the old dirt track days."
Greg Biffle, No. 16 National Guard Ford Taurus:
"I've always like night races. It's fun to race under the lights. I don't necessarily like it when the race starts in the day and runs into the night because it can make visibility bad but I definitely think the night racing is a better show for the fans. The tires also have more grip and it's cooler inside of the cars. Another added bonus is that we get Sunday off."
Matt Kenseth, No. 17 DEWALT Ford Taurus:
"I prefer Saturday night races, not so much Sunday night races. I think it's really cool for the fans to watch and, at a lot of tracks, you can actually see better at night."
Kurt Busch, No. 97 IRWIN Industrial Tools / Sharpie Ford Taurus:
"There's definitely more electricity in the air for night races -- literally I guess. If I were buying a ticket and sitting in the grandstand I would definitely enjoy the night races more because it gives fans an opportunity to enjoy a full day at the racetrack and everything that goes on outside. From the driver's seat its often cooler during night races, and the facilities do a great job with the lighting, so that never is an issue."
Carl Edwards, No. 99 Office Depot Ford Taurus:
"I like any kind of racing, day or night."
Todd Kluever, No. 50 Rotella T Ford F-150:
"I like the night races and luckily we have several of them in the Craftsman Truck Series. They remind me of racing back home in Wisconsin at the weekly short tracks on a Friday or Saturday night. Racing under the lights is a pretty cool experience for the drivers and the fans."
Ricky Craven, No. 99 Superchips Ford F-150:
"I enjoy night racing. It can be challenging because often you practice in the daytime, so you have to plan your adjustments accordingly. I like the fact it is considerably cooler which makes it easier on the drivers, and I think it is a great show for the fans as well."
