Green Kicks Off Testing; Will Attempt to Qualify for Cup Race at RIR
Richmond, VA August 10, 2004 - NASCAR Busch Series title contender David Green kicked off five straight weeks of testing at Richmond International Raceway on Monday. Green, who will attempt to qualify for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race on September 11 at Richmond International Raceway, spent two days at the .75-mile track testing a car purchased from Dale Earnhardt, Incorporated.
"If you're going to get a car from someone, it needs to be a front running team," explained Green. "This is a cool deal, having known Dale Earnhardt, Sr., these [Dale Earnhardt, Inc.] are good people. This is not just an old Cup car; this is an old DEI car. And when I say old, I mean three or four months old."
Richmond's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup event will be Green's first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup attempt with BREWCO Motorsports and Richmond-based Timberwolf. "We chose Richmond as a thank-you to Timberwolf since this is their home track," said Green who is currently fifth in the NASCAR Busch Series points standings and will also race in the Emerson Radio 250 on Friday, September 10. "Then I realized that it's the 26th race. There's a lot on the line for those guys and I am excited to have the chance to participate in such a big event, especially at Richmond."
With the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 being the final race that will set the field for the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, the event has taken on even more significance than in past seasons, as drivers are preparing for a quadruple header weekend.
Other drivers scheduled to participate in testing as the number of events wind down in the "Road to Richmond," include defending race champion Ryan Newman, Mike Bliss, Johnny Sauter, Jeremy Mayfield, David Stremme, Terry Labonte, Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin, Jeff Burton and more.
The up-coming quadruple header weekend at Richmond International Raceway will include the Crown Royal IROC and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series 200 doubleheader on Thursday, September 9, the Emerson Radio 250 NASCAR Busch Series race on Friday, September 10 and the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race on Saturday, September 11. Friday's action will also include Fas Mart Pole Qualifying for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400.
All races will be held at night "under the lights." For tickets and information, fans can log onto www.rir.com or call 866-455-RACE (7223). All tickets for both great races on Thursday are only $30 and tickets for Friday, which also include Fas Mart Pole Qualifying for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400, are only $40 in the reserved sections and $35 in the general admission sections. Kids 12 and under are free both days in general admission sections when accompanied by a ticketed adult.
