Notes: This is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Goodyear brought to Richmond twice last season . . . this is the first time this season NASCAR teams will run on this combination . . . other tracks where teams will run these tires are New Hampshire and Phoenix . . . both the NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series will compete on the same tires this weekend . . . as on all NASCAR ovals less than one mile in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Richmond.
Goodyear Quote Mark Keto , Lead Engineer, Stock Car Tire Development:
"After the track sealer issue during the spring race at Richmond last year, Goodyear brought Tony Stewart, Ricky Rudd and Jimmie Johnson to the track for a test in July, just to confirm our tire recommendation. Based on that test and a problem-free race in September, we decided to come back with the same tire set-up for Richmond this season. These were two new tire codes in the Goodyear lineup for the 2002 season, so with this now being the sixth race Winston Cup teams have worked with this combination, they should have a good set of notes to work from."
