Buckshot Racing Scales Back NASCAR Winston Cup Schedule

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (June 17, 1999) --- Buckshot Jones and the Buckshot Racing team announced today that they will be scaling back the races they compete in on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit for the remainder of the 1999 season. Jones will also be taking over the driving duties of the team's No.00 Cheez-It® Pontiac on the NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division when the schedule allows. "This team has worked incredibly hard throughout the beginning of their rookie season on the Winston Cup series," said team owner Billy Jones. "It has been a tough start for us this year. Not only is Buckshot a rookie driver, but this entire organization is a rookie Winston Cup team. They go to these tracks without any information to guide them and if they want to be successful in this competitive series, they cannot afford to go to these races without that information. "We are planning to run a more limited number of races during the second half of the season," continued Billy Jones. "We are going to pick the tracks that suit Buckshot at this point in his career and test those tracks. We want to go to those races prepared from the time the car is pulled off the truck." "We're learning more and more about the Winston Cup cars each weekend, but not having a teammate or notes from previous years to go back on does hurt us," said Buckshot Jones. "I think taking the time to test the tracks we want to compete at will help all of us and it will still give me the track time I need to run more laps and get more experience. When we get to the track we spend most of our time just finding a starting point and we have to catch up the rest of the weekend. I want to concentrate on learning what these cars really do on the tracks and how to convey that to my crew chief. I think taking this plan of action will help me do that." Jones will not compete in the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway this weekend, with the next scheduled Winston Cup race being the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 3rd. Jones is also scheduled to drive in the Lysol 200 Busch Series race at Watkins Glen on June 27th.
