Ryan Newman In The No.12 Alltel/Mobil 1 Ford Was The Highest Qualifying Raybestos® Rookie At Michigan.
THAT WAS A GOOD LAP, BUT WE EXPECTED MORE THAN THAT.
"So did I. The car was a little loose there that first lap and I didn't really expect that. I drove it pretty hard just under the conditions. The track had a lot of grip in it. It was a good run for the Mobil 1/Alltel Ford. I slowed down a little bit on the second lap. The tires were a little bit hotter, the motor was a little bit hotter, and we still ended up seventh. So far so good."
ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED?
"No. I mean, you try as hard as you can and sometimes it doesn't make any difference. Overall, it was a good run. It's a good race car, there's no doubt about that."
DID THE WEATHER CONDITIONS FOOL YOU AT ALL?
"We bottomed out a lot harder, which we kind of anticipated, but not quite to the magnitude that we did. The conditions changed, but they changed for everybody."
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 29TH.
This is going to be the best starting position we've had in five or six weeks. At Chicago we came from the back to finish fourth. We've had great race cars. There's some crazy things going on in qualifying. We broke a motor last week, crashed in Chicago, crashed -more- -2-
here (today) running through some oil that the 30 car (Jeff Green) put down. But the best thing is all these guys on this Lowe's team, they never give up. They've got a great hotrod waiting for me in the trailer and actually I think we're going to be better off with this race car. This is the one that we had at Pocono but the car I crashed was the one we won at California with so it's kind of hard not to bring that one. But we've got a great hotrod here and I'm really excited."
