Matt Kenseth notched his series-high third win of the season with today's victory in the Sirius Satellite Radio 400. Sterling Marlin, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson all have two each.
The win was Kenseth's fourth career NASCAR Winston Cup win and first at Michigan International Speedway. In addition, it was the sixth victory for Ford in 2002, most among manufacturers, and increased it's lead in the manufacturer's standings to more than 20 points.
GARY BRADBERRY --90-- Duke's Mayonnaise Taurus (Finished 43rd)
WHAT HAPPENED? "We don't know. We think we may have a rear end gear or something that's gone bad. The car just got so loose that you couldn't drive it. When we put new tires on, it didn't help a bit. It was still so loose. We were gonna end up wrecking our car and maybe taking somebody with us and it just wasn't worth it."
HOW DID IT FEEL TO BE BACK OUT THERE? "It felt good, but it doesn't feel good not to be competitive."
DALE JARRETT --88-- UPS Taurus (Finished 2nd)
"I just needed one more corner, if I could have had that. Congratulations to Matt, he did a great job. That was a great call by Todd Parrott and the pit crew did a good job when we came in there at the end. We didn't have anything to lose. Our car, for some reason, went from being so great to so tight it was unbelievable and we didn't really adjust anything other than trying to free it up. I don't know what happened to it, but it turned out to be a great finish. Like I said, one more corner and I think I could have got him."
WHAT DID YOU THINK WHEN YOU HEARD GAS AND FOUR TIRES? "Well, a lot of times you think about that, but I knew that we had run these tires for a whole stop and, from what I saw, two tires wasn't very good for a couple of laps. I knew my car was fast for a couple of laps there, so it was just a case if I could make the right moves and I was fortunate to do that. I had an awesome engine in this thing. We came close, but it was a great day for us."
RYAN NEWMAN --12-- ALLTEL Taurus (Finished 3rd)
"I got a pretty good restart off the line and I got into turn one and I had to scare Jimmie Johnson like you wouldn't believe. I didn't mean to, but I just got a little loose and shook up and he gave me the room, which was nice of him. The last lap I got tight off of turn two and just couldn't get the run. I tried to get him going into one. I didn't think that was gonna work, but I figured I try and shove my nose and see what he'd do. But, overall, it was a good run for the ALLTEL Ford coming back from some of our engine problems. The horsepower was great and the reliability was great. We just need to keep it up."
IS THIS TEAM GAINING MOMENTUM? "We've had momentum all year, but something keeps knocking the wind out of our sail. I think once that stops happening, we'll be doing alright."
RICKY RUDD --28-- Havoline Taurus (Finished 8th)
"We had a fourth-place car and we ended up eighth. That's about all we've got to say. In hindsight, I wish we would have pitted and at least put on two tires. We just got beat pretty bad on that deal. Our car was good on hot tires, but we couldn't race those guys on two tires." THAT WAS A WILD THREE LAP DASH. "Yeah, I don't like it but what are you gonna do? I understand why we have it, but it sure throws a kink in everyone's plan."
RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus (Finished 7th)
"My car was just a little on the tight side all day long. We kept on adjusting it with air pressures and all, but it was tight over there at the end. We stopped on the next-to-last stop -- the one under green -- and took on right side tires. When a bunch of them pitted there before the restart, I called for lefts. That kind of balanced us out and helped the handling and probably got us a few spots further up at the finish."
MATT KENSETH --17-- DEWALT Power Tools Taurus -- VICTORY LANE INTERVIEW -- "The 88 really came up there quick. He would have had me in one more lap, so I'm glad he didn't get there as soon as he did. It was a great run for the DEWALT car. Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there and I'm pretty pumped to be back in victory lane."
HOW DO YOU HOLD A CAR OFF AT THE END? "It's tough if they're faster than you are, but we were able to get off the corner better, so the key to this big track is to be able to get in the gas earlier than the guy you're racing." WHAT DOES THIS WIN MEAN AS FAR AS POINTS? "The last two weeks, we ran good at Dover. We were on the pole, but we had some problems and had to start in the back and ended up blowing a tire running in the top 10. So I felt like we ran pretty good there and did our job. Last week, we were running second when our transmission broke, so some things are out of your control and we'll have to do the best job we can do to manage the things that are in our control and take them one week at a time and see where we end up."
MARK MARTIN --6-- Viagra Taurus (Finished 9th)
"We turned one good lap qualifying and got one decent finish at the end there by fighting hard all day. It was a great team effort. It certainly didn't run very good, but I'm real happy with the finish. We fought hard, but we'll have to try to do better the next time we come up here."
KURT BUSCH --97-- Rubbermaid Taurus (Finished 10th)
"The red flag really hurt us because we ended up going from fifth to 10th. It's really too bad because we were running fifth at the time and the only thing we could do was stay out."
ELLIOTT SADLER --21-- Motorcraft Taurus (Finished 26th)
"That's very frustrating to get that close to trying to get your lap back, but we just missed it somewhere today. I don't know. The car was going through the corners good, but we were just getting killed down the straightaway. I don't know what it was, but we should have had about a 17th or 18th place finish and then I spun out leaving pit road -- just trying to get all I could get, trying too hard and we finished 26th. That's not the finish we were looking for. We've been qualifying good, but our races are killing us. I'm trying to run the car as loose as I can to keep it free, but it's just not working that way. We'll go back to the drawing board and see if we can make up some points when we get to Sears Point."
GEOFFREY BODINE --26-- Discover Card Taurus (Finished 19th)
"We made a heck of a lot of adjustments this morning and I wasn't quite sure what to expect with no practice. I'm not totally satisfied with the finish, but with no practice that's pretty darn good. It was a pretty good race for us. The car kept getting better and better, and to top it off, Todd won the Busch race. I'm proud of him and I thank Travis Carter for this opportunity."
