Nemechek Finishes 27th in Caution-Filled Bristol Race

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 28, 2004) -- An early handling problem proved costly to United States Army driver Joe Nemechek, who finished 27th in Sunday's Food City 500 here at Bristol Motor Speedway.

"We really never got going," said Nemechek, who started the race from the 28th position. "The biggest problem in the beginning was the U.S. Army/USG Chevy got hung up on the outside lane and that caused excessive wear to my right front tires.

"I didn't have the grip, we got lapped (by lap 52 of 500) and from that point of the race it was an uphill battle to try and get back the track position we lost. It made for a long day."

Though Nemechek never got back on the lead lap, he kept his poise on the half-mile bullring that produced numerous spinouts and wrecks, resulting in 11 cautions for 85 laps.

"To finish here with the car in one piece is a consolation," said Nemechek. "It's not the finish we had expected, but we'll just put this race behind us and get ready for Texas next week."

The Texas race -- Samsung 400 -- will be contested Sunday (April 4) at Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth.
