BRISTOL, Tenn. (Aug. 28, 2004) - Scott Riggs brought the Valvoline Chevrolet across the finish line 17th in Saturday night's Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

After a disappointing qualifying effort, Riggs was forced to start the 500-lap event from the 39th position but was able to avoid several multi-car crashes to bring home a top-20 finish for the Valvoline team.

"We had a big hill to climb," said Riggs, who was credited with Raybestos rookie of the race honors. "We didn't qualify where we needed to, but we got out there, worked on the race car and kept getting better and better. My spotter did a great job and we were able to avoid the wrecks and keep the fenders on the Valvoline Chevy.

"The main thing that we did tonight was survive until the checkered flag. We let the faster guys pass us and stayed patient. Toward the end of the race, I was good enough to get some of those spots back and come home with a decent finish.

"I've got to give an A plus to entire Valvoline crew. They gave me great pit stops and kept trying their best to adjust everything they could. Doug (Randolph, crew chief) never gave up, kept throwing stuff at it and I just kept driving it. I'm glad to finally get a whole Bristol race under my belt."

The next stop for the Nextel Cup Series will be California Speedway in Fontana. The Pop Secret 500 will be broadcast live on NBC at 7 p.m. EDT.
