Ryan Newman in the no. 12 Alltel Ford was the highest qualifying Raybestos® Rookie at Bristol.
"We would have been pretty good that second lap. I just tried a little hard off of four there and tried to stay in the gas and got it pretty sideways. It was our fastest lap and shows you how fast it would have been if we would have kept it straight. We were just trying real hard."
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 32ND .
"It's loose. We've been real loose and we were loose in qualifying and it looks like we're going to have to come from the back."
WHAT HAPPENED IN PRACTICE?
"I got loose off of turn two and the right rear brushed the wall. It didn't hit it very hard but it shorted us on some practice time."
CARL LONG, NO. 51 REVIVAL SOY DODGE
"We were just a little bit away from it in practice. Apparently the changes because of the rain or whatever happened tightened the car up right in the center. I don't think that's going to make it. I didn't have everything that I needed, but I was close enough that I thought I could get it in. I don't think that's going to do it."
TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW SITUATION.
"As long as we make races, it is for the rest of the year but when you don't make races it's kind of tough. They (Ware Racing) had three full time Craftsman Truck teams and they went down to two and decided to go do some Winston Cup racing. They bought a car from Kyle (Petty) and I knew about it from the Petty connection so I've been begging them to let me run it. So here I am. I just really wanted to get in. It's kind of tough on a new deal coming out like this. We didn't get a chance to practice and whatever we did we just missed it a little bit."
SELECTED QUOTES FROM NEWMAN POST QUALIFYING INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL WALTRIP.
WALTRIP: WE SAW YOU COMING TO THE CHECKERED FLAG SIDEWAYS. WOULD YOU CARE TO COMMENT?
NEWMAN: "We were about three one-hundredths underneath the pole at the time which would have been about a .46 which would have been pretty good. But woulda, coulda, shoulda."
WALTRIP: DO YOU THINK YOU WERE GOING THAT FAST BECAUSE YOU WERE GOING TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS?
NEWMAN: "That's what the race car told me (laughs). It was one of those deals where you hang on the best you can. Actually, the second lap was the better one and that was pretty impressive itself."
WALTRIP: IS IT INTIMADITING TO QUALIFY AT BRISTOL?
NEWMAN: "It's just fast. You know for yourself when you go out there and qualify at Daytona or Talladega it takes a minute just to take the green. Here you are done in less than a minute. It's a whole different thing of concentration and being ready and mentally prepared to go out there and get everything you can out of the race car in 30 seconds."
WALTRIP: I HAVE A MENTAL BLOCK. I CANNOT RUN THE SECOND LAP FAST. I ALWAYS DO MY BEST ON THE FIRST LAP. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
NEWMAN: "Because you are thinking about one good fast lap. You're worried about the one time. You're not worried about two laps and taking the best time. Does that make sense?"
WALTRIP: I LIKE WHERE YOU ARE HEADED WITH THAT BECAUSE IT WORKED FOR ME TODAY BUT IT WAS LUCK.
