Top 10 Eludes Almirola in Bristol; Finishes 13th
BRISTOL, Tenn. (Aug. 23, 2008) -- Aric Almirola nearly pulled off another top-10 finish at Bristol Motor Speedway but a pit-road miscue late in the race dropped him to a 13th-place result in Saturday night's Sharpie 500.
The 24-year-old U.S. Army driver, who finished eighth in the Bristol spring race, was in position for a repeat performance at the half-mile oval. But a lengthy pit stop on Lap 452 of 500 cost him four positions -- from ninth to 13th -- when the race restarted a few laps later.
"Aric drove another awesome race and it should have been a top-10 finish," said crew chief Tony Gibson. "We made a mistake on a pit stop and there wasn't enough time to make up the positions we lost. Usually when you finish 13th at Bristol you're not that upset, but tonight we are. We know we're a better team than what the finish showed."
Almirola, who was making his seventh Cup start of the season and 13th of his career, ran in the top 10 for the majority of the second half of the race. His highest position of seventh came when he passed Tony Stewart on Lap 385.
"We had a strong run tonight and it's just too bad we had that hiccup near the end of the race," said Almirola, who shares the No. 8 Army ride with Mark Martin. "This team gave me a good car tonight and our Chevy Impala SS was definitely capable of equaling our finish here in the spring. I told the team that I am proud of them and we're all in this together. When you wear the Army uniform you don't point fingers, you support each other and fight on."
The No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Inc. team remains 15th in Sprint cup owner points.
