Quotes from Dale Earnhardt Jr. / Driver, #8 Budweiser Chevrolet:
About the debut of the Car of Tomorrow this weekend at Bristol: "I'm not sure anyone is looking forward to Bristol. (laughs) The number of unknowns is through the roof with the Car of Tomorrow, but it's the same for everybody. We'll all learn how the new car is going to work and what unexpected issues pop up. I can say the track and the racing will be the same. It's a bumpy, rough track and when you finish 500 laps there, you feel like you've been in the ring with Mike Tyson - the young, bad-ass Mike Tyson. The track is so rough, it will beat you up even when you're running alone, like a hammer to your organs. But you throw in 42 other cars, and it's like a cage match. You can't go anywhere or make a move without running into something or someone. I think that may be a big key: who can take care of their car for the full distance. Who can survive without finding the weak link in these new cars may be the last man standing at the end. Luckily, I'm running the Busch race on Saturday, so my guys and I will probably be too busy running back-and-forth to worry about it all."
Minutiae: Dale Jr. was the first driver to ever "sweep the weekend" at Bristol when he won the Busch Series race and then the Nextel Cup event in August 2004. The victories were the first for Junior after suffering burns in a sports car crash the month before... The 295 laps led in the 2004 victory (lapping all but the top-six finishers) are the most laps led in any of his 258 starts in his Cup career... Dale Jr. will also race in the Busch Series event this weekend, in a Budweiser/Sharpie-sponsored DEI entry.
Primary Chassis this week: This weekend marks the competition debut of the NASCAR "Car o' Tomorrow," which will become the "Car of Today" when the event begins. The Dale Earnhardt Inc. Budweiser team will begin the Co'T era with chassis #051 - a Chevrolet Impala SS. It is a brand new chassis. The car the team tested at Bristol in February will be the back-up. (All Chevy entries in Co'T races will be badged as Impala, while the cars entered in "regular" races will remain badged as Monte Carlo SS.)
