Brian Simo had a disappointing finish to his first NASCAR Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. The Carlsbad, Calif., driver started 42nd in the 43-car field after a track worker's miscue derailed his qualifying effort. He drove a strong race in the No. 90 Hills Bros Coffee Ford, moving as high as fifth on a two-stop pit strategy, and settled into 25th place after all drivers made their final pit stops. But a late-race restart cost him the finish when he was tagged from behind and spun into the wall on lap 84 of 90. He finished 37th.

"The Hills Bros team did a great job," he said. "It was really exciting to bring this car up from where we started. I was looking forward to the last few laps and a good finish, but we'll have better luck next year."
