DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 29, 2003) -- Fans of the NASCAR Winston Cup era were treated Friday to a sneak preview of a special Talladega Superspeedway "Victory Lap" tribute to Bobby Allison. The long-time leader of the famed "Alabama Gang" unveiled his red, white, silver and gold No. 22 Victory Lap car at Darlington Raceway following a press conference where he was joined by Talladega Superspeedway President Grant Lynch and NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter.
The three long-time NASCAR fixtures reminisced about Allison's glory days as leader of the Alabama NASCAR racing contingent that also included Allison's brother Donnie (who also was in attendance), sons Davey and Clifford Allison and fellow Alabamans Neil Bonnett and Red Farmer. Together, they amassed 10 wins on the high banks at Talladega. In addition to Bobby's four wins, Davey scored three victories, Donnie won twice and Bonnett once.
"It's incredible what the Allisons did to promote Talladega Superspeedway," Hunter said. "The Alabama Gang is part of the Talladega tradition, and it's only fitting that we recognize Bobby as we salute our partners at Winston."
Lynch agreed, saying: "The Allisons have always meant so much to us throughout the years at Talladega and they're still there for us. To pair Winston, which enjoyed the longest running event sponsor in motorsports as the title sponsor of the Winston 500 for 30 years, with Bobby Allison and the Alabama Gang at NASCAR's most competitive race track is a fitting tribute."
"Donnie and I went to Alabama lots and lots of years ago and Winston added so much to our sport for all of us," Allison said. "We represented Alabama but we also represented NASCAR and Winston from day one. We really enjoyed doing that and the success we had along the way."
Allison will celebrate his Winston Cup career and 1983 Winston Cup championship during pre-race festivities for the EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sept. 28.
