2002 Winner Elliott to Race in 2004 Brickyard 400
INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, June 22, 2004 -- 2002 Brickyard 400 winner Bill Elliott will race in the 11th Brickyard 400 on Aug. 8 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in an Evernham Motorsports Dodge sponsored by aftermarket automotive supplier Visteon Corporation, team and sponsor officials announced June 22.
1988 NASCAR champion Elliott, 48, is racing a limited schedule this season after competing full time in NASCAR's top series from 1983-2003. He won the 2002 Brickyard 400 from the second starting position in an Evernham Motorsports Dodge.
Elliott, from Dawsonville, Ga., has been one of the top performers in Brickyard 400 history. Besides his 2002 victory, he finished third in 1994 and 2000, fourth in 1995, fifth in 2003, and eighth in 1997 and 2001. Elliott has completed an astounding 1,599 of the 1,600 total laps in Brickyard 400 history.
A winner of 44 NASCAR races, Elliott raced this season in the Bud Shootout in February at Daytona International Speedway and in the Samsung/Radio Shack 500 in April at Texas Motor Speedway.
This will be the first primary sponsorship by Visteon Aftermarket operations in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. Elliott will drive the No. 91 Visteon Dodge at Indianapolis.
"Continued success in motorsports -- particularly in NASCAR -- always includes strong support from committed sponsors," said Ray Evernham, CEO of Evernham Motorsports. "Visteon brings that commitment to our sport, and we are pleased to be the team to manage their first primary car sponsorship in NASCAR."
Visteon's Aftermarket operations are a leading supplier of glass, electronics and underhood parts.
