Greg Biffle turned the fastest lap at California Speedway in final practice for Cup teams. Biffle's lap of 186.809 mph bested Scott Riggs by just a tick.
Riggs grabbed the second quickest time with a lap of 186.800 mph.
"Hopefully this entire season we'll be a million miles away from the luck we had last year," said Riggs. "Right now, we have this ball of momentum rolling toward us and it's getting bigger and bigger. This is the first time we've gotten the chance to show just how big it is and now it's rolling even faster heading into next week. This is going to be a fun year for us."
Carl Edwards was third fastest. The No. 99 Ford toured the 1.5-mile speedway with a lap of 186.417 mph.
Ryan Newman and Jeff Gordon complete the top five.
"To me, this weekend's a true tale of who is going to be strong throughout the year," Gordon said. "I'm looking forward to that opportunity. I think we've got a great car and a great team. I'm just hoping we use this as momentum and keep up the great work."
This weekend marked the first try at an amended weekend schedule for Cup teams. Instead of three practice sessions and a "happy hour", Cup teams were permitted two practice hours and will qualify cars Saturday.
The cars will be impounded directly after time-trial sessions unable to be touched until Sunday morning.
