Benson, Schrader set to race in the Chester Mysliwiec Open Memorial 100 presented by Comerica
MARNE, MI Berlin Raceway is set to host arguably the biggest event of the 2001 season on Wednesday, August 15 the Chester Mysliwiec Open Invitational Memorial 100 Race. NASCAR Winston Cup stars Johnny Benson and Kenny Schrader headline the field, which also is scheduled to include ASA drivers and local favorites Butch Miller and Gary St. Amant.
The 100-lap Late Model feature race is a tribute to Berlin Raceway founder Chester Mysliwiec, who passed away in 1999. The Mysliwiec family owned Berlin Raceway Inc. for 50 years.
The $10,000-to-win ($70,000 total purse) open invitational, sponsored by Comerica, also serves as a fundraiser for the Berlin 4-H program. One dollar for every ticket sold will be donated.
"Comerica is always looking for opportunities to give back and get more involved in the community," said Joe Davio, Comerica Regional Bank President. "The Chester Mysliwiec Memorial 100 felt like a great way to get more involved in the West Michigan community and invest in youth through 4-H."
Benson will race the #10 Late Model car that he personally built and raced in three previous appearances at Berlin this season. He finished 19th on May 9 (a 50-lap qualifier for the May 12 100-lap race), seventh on May 12 and fourth on June 30. Benson hopes to continue his upward momentum by winning Wednesday's race - and having fun in the process.
"It's going to be a lot of fun," said Benson. "It's just a chance to relax and do some racing. Kenny Schrader is going up there and I'm bringing my road crew guys up there for the Wednesday night race. Those guys all grew up short track racing and we are just going to go up there and have a lot of fun. I raced at Schrader's track in Missouri last year so he is coming to my place now. Knowing Schrader and my road guys, we might even have a party after the race."
Benson and Schrader's participation marks the first time that two current Winston Cup drivers will compete in the same event at Berlin Raceway.
Wednesday's packed schedule includes two 50-lap Late Model qualifying races to set the field for the 100-lap feature event. Berlin's Sportsman division will also race. The race will be broadcast live on WXSP TV, with long-time Berlin Raceway public address announcer Norm Jelsma and MRN broadcaster Rob Albright calling all the racing action.
Gates open at 11 a.m. and the complete schedule of events follows. Ticket prices are $20 for general admission and $25 for pit passes. Children ages 5-12 are $5 and children 4 and under are free. A special Chester Mysliwiec Memorial T-shirt will be given away to 1,000 fans courtesy of Comerica.
