Rusty Wallace Announces Retirement after 2005 Season
BARRY DODSON (Wallace's Crew Chief in 1989 Championship Season)
"I remember the determination it took to win it after losing it by just a few points in 1988. We knew we needed to focus more on leading all the laps we could. We realized we needed to be a better race team if we were going to win it, and we worked on that. We didn't have the financial backing. I think we won it with a lot of heart and character, and I know most of that heart came from Rusty. He was there with us. He was focused on the racecar at all times. We were like the Oakland Raiders back then. We tried to fool a few race teams into thinking we weren't focused and this and that, but when it came time to get after it, we did. We knew we had to run good."
WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT RUSTY ADMITTING HIS FEELINGS ABOUT EARNHARDT'S DEATH?
"I think it says a lot. I know Rusty very well, and I know the toll that Earnhardt losing his life has taken on him as well as it's taken on anybody who knew that man for a number of years or even just being a race fan. What does come to mind, I take drivers like David Pearson and Cale Yarborough. When they left the sport they were highly competitive, and you have to respect Rusty for that. Nobody is driving any harder right now than he is."
