HAMPTON, Ga. (Oct. 28, 1998) For the second straight day, MBNA America Pontiac driver Ward Burton was the quickest NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver of the 12 men who tested Wednesday at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Nov. 8 NAPA 500. Burton, who will head to the North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham in time for Friday's Bud Pole Award Qualifying session for Sunday's ACDelco 400, was clocked at 188.957 mph on Wednesday on the 1.54-mile AMS quad-oval. Rick Mast, the defending Bud Pole winner from the spring race at Rockingham, was second fastest on Wednesday at Atlanta, as he turned a lap in 188.443 mph in the Remington Arms Ford. Rounding out the top-five speeds were Jeremy Mayfield in the Mobil 1 Ford, 188.315; Bobby Hamilton in the Kodak Max Film Chevrolet, 187.996; and Ken Schrader in the Skoal Bandit Chevrolet, 187.729. Speeds of the other drivers who tested Wednesday included: Wally Dallenbach, 186.603; Chad Little, 185.604; Robert Pressley, 185.600; Rich Bickle, 185.046; David Green in the Kodiak Chevrolet, 184.800; John Andretti, 184.554; and Kenny Wallace, who continued his debut outing in the No. 55 Andy Petree Racing Chevrolet that he will drive next season, 184.370. The NAPA 500 will conclude a full weekend of events that include the Winn-Dixie 250 ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series race on Friday, Nov. 6; and the Stihl 300 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division event on Saturday, Nov. 7.
