Marlin Scores Fourth Top-10 Of Season
HAMPTON, Ga. (March 10, 2002) - Sterling Marlin drove the Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T to a top-10 finish in the MBNA America 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Marlin is the only Winston Cup driver to score top-10 finishes in all four races of the 2002 season. Chassis No. 115 also has never finished outside of the top-10 - in seven starts Marlin has driven it to six top-5 finishes. Marlin remains the leader in the NASCAR Winston Cup championship points standings; he leads Ryan Newman by 74 points.
The Coors Light Dodge started the event in 12th position and moved into the top-10 on lap 44. Although Marlin kept the car in the top-15 all day, he radioed in early wanting adjustments during pit stops. Throughout the six pit stops the team took during the 325-lap event, the Coors Light crew continued to make adjustments on the car and kept Marlin out front to contend in the top-10. Marlin took the checkered flag in ninth place - his fourth top-10 of the season.
"The car never really drove good all day," Marlin said. "It never did have any grip. It would lose the front end and go to pushing. We're a little disappointed. This car has never finished out of the top-5 before today, and it was ninth today. I guess that's pretty good when you're disappointed with a ninth-place finish. I remember not to long ago I would have been really happy finishing ninth."
Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light team is the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 at Darlington Raceway on March 17, 2002.
