Tony Stewart Climbs the Fence at Atlanta Motor Speedway After Winning the Bass Pro Shops 500
HAMPTON, Ga. (October 29, 2006) -- Tony Stewart edged Jimmie Johnson at Atlanta Motor Speedway tonight, winning the Bass Pro Shops 500 under the lights.
Stewart won the race after leading a race-high 146 laps.
"I told (Bass Pro Shops founder) Johnny Morris how bad I wanted that trophy," Stewart said referring to "Big Roar", the 280 pound, 8-foot-tall bronze grizzly bear trophy. "I am building a log house in Columbus, Ind., and that trophy is going somewhere really, really special in it."
Major fireworks came on lap 309 when a wreck collected six cars, including Chase for the Cup contender Mark Martin. On old tires, Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the field to the green flag following the final caution of the evening, but was no match for eventual race winner Stewart, who got four new tires during the last pit stop.
"We had a really good car on new tires and a really bad car on old tires," Earnhardt Jr. said after beating fellow Chaser Matt Kenseth to the finish line for third-place by inches. "We tried to set the car up for the long run, but it took a lot of the speed away from the car."
Greg Biffle finished fifth tonight, with Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Joe Nemechek and Robby Gordon rounding out the top-10.
Following the showdown under the lights at AMS, Kenseth leads the NEXTEL Cup championship points by just 26 markers over Jimmie Johnson. Rookie Denny Hamlin sits third, trailing Kenseth by 65 points. Earnhardt Jr. and Kenseth are tied for fourth, 85 points behind the leader.
