ON HIS THIRD PLACE FINISH
"We got two tires there at the end. I think three and four [cars] got four which is kind of strange with only three green flag laps. So we got two and so did a lot of other people. The 11 [Hamlin] ran out of gas on the restart, everybody slammed on the brakes and I went down low. Then we made it through that. We restarted fourth and went off into [turn] one ready to race for another two laps and the 8 car's tire fell off. We had a good car all day. We had about a fifth place car all day. So it's pretty good to come out of here in third.
"We ran in ninth pretty much all day. We had a pretty good car. It got pretty crazy there at the end, as everybody could see. We had a really good car all day. [I] felt like we didn't make any mistakes all day; just kept tuning on the car getting it a little better. [It] was really good on long runs, just didn't need that caution to come out there. We were going to finish pretty good there. Pretty good day for us. [I'm] pretty happy to do it here in Atlanta."
ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FINISHING THIRD AT HIM HOMETOWN TRACK
"We had a really good car here in the spring too. I think we finished ninth. We like to run good here. It has been a pretty good track for us overall. We had our first top 10 last year, here, at Atlanta. We feel like this is one of our stronger tracks. We knew we had a good car coming into today because it is the car at Texas and ran really well with. We were pretty excited to come here and before we even unloaded the car we felt pretty good about it. It was really good in practice. To run good in Atlanta means a lot because it is where I'm from. It is always nice to run good in your home town. Hopefully we can continue this streak for the rest of the year and build some momentum going into next season."
HAVE YOU HAD TIRE ISSUES IN PREVIOUS YEARS?
"This track always wears tires really bad even in practice. I think we had a set after twenty laps that had cords [showing] on them. The truck race yesterday, I think they were on a little bit different tire and they were still showing cords. There were a couple times today on long runs I started getting those vibrations and I just slowed down after seeing a few people blow tires. I think the older this track gets, it's getting tough on tires. For me, I thought the tires had really good grip at the beginning of a run which usually means they're going to wear out pretty fast. And, the pace slowed way down from the start of the run to the end of a run so it was going to be close all day for people to be able make a full green flag run without having one of your right side tires in the cords."
