Newman Wins Sixth Straight Pole at AMS
RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger)
"That was a really great lap, and the car was really balanced. Any time you get around the track like this you've got to have good horsepower, so I've got to thank the guys back in the engine room. They did a great job. You never know what to expect, but I'm really happy and satisfied to get six (poles) in a row at this racetrack. It says a lot about our team and its versatility the way everything has changed with the tires and the cars and setups and everything else. It's really a feather in our cap.
"At times we've performed well on Sunday after qualifying this well. We've had some power train problems, we've had some handling problems, we've had some tire problems here last fall with the fastest race car. The tire was just plain out of balance. We've had some crazy things happen in the race that put us back to not be able to show our speed in reference to qualifying. We really struggled this spring in the race, and we need to make sure we're better, and I feel we will be better in the race in race trim. I really look forward to the race.
"If Jimmie and Tony have problems there could easily be eight guys within 40 points of each other for the championship, you just never know. We're going to go out and focus on what we do as a team and let everything else fall. Anything can happen in the race and starting up front is a good thing and you get a good pit selection."
"I told her (wife Krissie) that winning the pole was for her (birthday present)."
IMMEDIATELY AFTER QUALIFYING LAP
"It was a good effort for the Alltel Dodge. Hopefully it holds up. I thought we were pretty good in practice, and I really enjoy qualifying here at night. The car was pretty stout. We were happy with it today in practice. It wasn't the fastest, but we felt like it would be a pretty good car. Mark Martin was pretty happy with his, and we thought we were comparable to him speedwise, so we'll see. This is a fast track, especially under these conditions. They did a great job repairing it after the tornado and everything. We enjoy this track. It's a handful in the race. I told them I was going for two laps if I didn't get everything on the first one. I ran it again and she felt pretty good. It was pretty darn close to a perfect lap. It'll be hard to beat that. If anyone can beat it they can have it."
