HANDLING ISSUES CURB NEMECHEK'S PERFORMANCE IN ATLANTA

ATLANTA (Oct. 30, 2005) -- Despite severe handling problems with his U.S. Army Chevrolet, Joe Nemechek persevered as he battled his way to an 18th-place finish Sunday in the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

No matter what adjustments were made to the 01 car during the 500-mile race, Nemechek could not find the proper grip for the high-speed 1.54-mile oval.

"The car wasn't good -- simple as that," said crew chief Ryan Pemberton. "Joe needs to be commended. He was a good soldier today -- he fought the handling to the end and gave us a gritty performance. It was really disappointing not being able to run up front because this is a track where we've had success."

In the past two fall races at Atlanta, Nemechek drove the Army car to top-10 finishes of 10th and fourth, respectively.

"It just wasn't there today," said Nemechek, who qualified 27th. "Though I am disappointed with the result, it could have been a lot worse. We had handling issues from the get go. We were making changes right to the end, hoping that something would click. But it never did."

Nemechek dropped two positions in the driver point standings. He is currently 15th, 89 points away from 11th with three races remaining in the 2005 Nextel Cup schedule.

"No question, today was a setback regarding points," said Nemechek. "But this Army team has rebounded before and we'll do it again. I am confident that we can post strong finishes in the last three races."

The first of the final three Nextel Cup events will be Sunday (Nov. 6) at Texas Motor Speedway.
