Denny Hamlin Solid at Atlanta -- Finishes 6th in the No. 11 Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota
Hampton, GA -- Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Joe Gibbs Racing, finished 6th tonight in the PEPBOYS Auto 500 from Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Denny Hamlin took the green flag from the 10th position and it didn't take him long to drive the Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota to the front. Throughout the first half of the race, Denny was trading the lead back and forth with a few others and it seemed as if the No. 11 Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota would be a factor throughout the night.
However, during the second half of the race the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team dealt with a loose No. 11 Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota and it seemed like keeping up with the track would be key for the team to be able to come away with a solid top-ten finish.
"It was difficult, that's for sure. It just seemed like the track had stages it went through. I've never seen a track change so much during the course of the race. We were the only team that maintained up front from the beginning to the end of the race. I don't know what it was. The track changed, and it seemed like every set of tires we put on were different. It was a challenge today to just get the balance," said Denny Hamlin after the Southern 500.
Still, the hard fought 6th place finish earned Denny Hamlin and his team something very important -- a confirmed spot in the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup "Race for the Chase."
"It's great for our whole FedEx team and Farm Bureau Insurance for coming on this weekend. It's a pretty good accomplishment to make it four years in a row, every year that we've tried. I just can't say enough for this team. If we keep running the next 11 (races) like we have these last 10 or 11, they're going to have to watch out for us," said Denny Hamlin about clinching a spot in this year's Sprint Cup Chase.
