AJ Allmendinger has officially spoken out on the substance abuse "A" sample test that he reportedly failed. On Saturday, July 7th prior to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Race at Daytona International Speedway, the news broke that the Penske Racing driver was put on an immediate temporary suspension for a positive substance abuse test.
Allmendinger was replaced by Sam Hornish Jr. to drive the No. 22 Dodge for the night race.
NASCAR stated that he did provide two samples, "A" and "B", and only the "A" one had been tested. They gave Allmendinger 72 hours to respond with a request that the "B" one be tested.
Allmendinger has now requested the "B" test per his per his statement today: “I have informed NASCAR that I have requested that the "B" sample be tested, following the steps according to NASCAR’s 2012 rule book regarding this situation. I fully respect NASCAR's drug usage policy and the reasons they have it. I am hoping this can get resolved as quickly as possible so that I can get back to driving the No. 22 Penske Racing Dodge."
However if the "B" sample comes back positive, Allmendinger will be suspended indefinitely by NASCAR.
"I am sorry that this has caused such a distraction for my Penske Racing team, our sponsors and fans. Obviously I would never do anything to jeopardize my opportunity here at Penske Racing or to my fellow drivers. I am very conscious about my training and health and would never knowingly take a prohibited drug," added Allmendinger.
It is not the first time that Allmendinger has found himself in hot water with NASCAR. In October of 2009, he failed a Breathalyzer test with a reading of .08. At that time he was one of Richard Petty Motorsports drivers, and he was placed on probation until December 31.
