The Race ... The Sprint Showdown is a 40-lap qualifying race consisting of two 20-lap segments, with teams having the option to make a pit stop after the first segment. The top two finishers in the Showdown transfer into the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. That event is 100 laps in distance, made up of four segments -- 50 laps, 20 laps, 20 laps and 10 laps -- and pays $1 million to win. Drivers already guaranteed a spot on the starting grid for NASCAR's all-star showcase have either won a race this season or last. Previous Sprint Cup Series champions from the last 10 years, who are still active competitors, are also locked in, in addition to previous winners of the All-Star race.
Up to Speed ... Live coverage of the Sprint Showdown and NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race will be televised on SPEED Saturday, May 16 beginning at 7 p.m. EDT. The second and final non-points event of the 2009 season will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the Sprint Cup Series annual all-star extravaganza will be telecast live on SPEED Friday, May 15 at beginning at 5 p.m. EDT.
SCOTT RIGGS QUOTES:
What are your thoughts about the potential of being voted into the race by the fans?
"I think it would be really neat to be voted into the race by the fans. However, I would like to do it the good old fashion way and win the Sprint Showdown. To be able to win the Sprint Showdown is something that could really give our race team the confidence we have been missing."
You won the Sprint Showdown in 2006. Do you think you can do it again this year?
"I think we have a pretty good car for this weekend. I think a good starting spot is key. If we can stay out of trouble I think we have a chance to win this thing."
