Quotes after Lap 35 accident
Lowe's Motor Speedway
Joe Nemechek #01 U.S. Army Chevrolet
Note: Multi-car accident brought out a red flag on Lap 35
Well, I am upset. You know, if guys want to race like that and if Kevin Harvick wants to be the (expletive) that he is-and hopefully that's a good word-that's wrong, you know? We're racing hard. I had new tires. He didn't put new tires on. So what. But I got hit in the back. Somebody hit me in the side and the back and it started the whole deal. I haven't seen the replay yet. I want to see it before I place blame. We have a restart with six to go and it's like the last lap of the race.
AFTER VIEWING THE TELEVISION REPLAY: Looking at the replays on TV, it's looking like Tony Stewart got his nose in there making it three wide coming off the corner. I'm just being careful. We had new tires, we pitted, had a great race car. The Army Chevy was good and just everything jumbled up right there. There was guys with old tires. Guys with new tires and Tony's car was really good. He got in there and got in my left rear quarter panel and started turning me and I hit Kevin and I just caused a heck of a big wreck. It's just disappointing as much work as everybody puts into these races to tear up for nothing.
Tony Stewart #20 The Home Depot Chevrolet
WHAT HAPPENED? I don't know. Come off of 4, got straight there and somehow got into the back of the #01. I didn't speed up, so I don't know what happened. I don't know if he got loose or something or what. He was having problems after he got out from the pit stop before. But, it's a shame. This is the car I wanted to bring back next week, so I don't know. Sad thing is that I'm not so sure I didn't cause it. I don't honestly know. I don't know why I ran into him if we're coming off the corner at the same speed then all of a sudden I run into him.
WERE YOU GOING FOR POSITION? No, wasn't even going for postion. Was just riding behind Nemechek and I don't know what happens when you come off the corner and you're running the same speed and I don't know how all of a sudden you go from that to running in the back of somebody. I don't know what happened or what he did, but I don't know if it's his fault, but I don't understand how we wrecked. That's the part that's puzzling me. It's not like we had a run coming off the corner or anything like that. We were running the exact same speed he was at that apart of the track for something like that to happen doesn't make a lot of sense.
Terry Labonte #44 Pizza Hut Chevrolet
Well, it's just really hard to say because everyone's running so close together. You know, a lot had new tires and some stayed out on old tires. I'm not sure. Somebody got together in front of Tony and I ran into the back of Tony and somebody ran into the back of me and it was kind of over from there.
IS IT ESPECIALLY HARD TO GET KNOCKED OUT OF A RACE WHEN YOU'RE RUNNING A LIMITED SCHEDULE? Well, it was for this one because I thought we had a pretty good car and we were pretty good in practice. We were making some adjustments and trying to get it dialed in for this next segment. It's disappointing but hey, we get to come back next week. We've got a good car for next week.
Kevin Harvick #29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet
CAN YOU TELL US WHAT HAPPENED OUT THERE? Yeah, I mean Joe Nemechek is supposed to be one of those guys that doesn't do nothing. He's acting like he doesn't do nothing. It may not have been his fault, but after Daytona and I should be fined and all that, he can take that and shove it where the sun don't shine, baby.
MORE COMMENTS ABOUT THE ACCIDENT: The worst thing about it is, all these cars are what we're bringing back next week. Pisses me off, to say the least, but I'm just tired of (Nemechek) running his mouth. Four weeks of frustration.
Michael Waltrip #15 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet
WHAT HAPPENED? That's a great question for a guy that was running 20th and they all started crashing and I had no idea what happened. The guys in the booth probably had a bird's eye view of it. And you know what happened. You're just trying to get me to say what I think happened. I just know that they all started crashing and I slowed down a little bit, but I think I must have hit the crash because usually I do a pretty good job of picking my way through a crash like that. I got sideways. I lost control of my car and when you've done that, it pretty much takes out any chance you have of weeding your way through it. Unfortunate, but we learned a great deal in a short period of time. We found out a lot that will help us next week for the 600. I'm pleased with what we learned and the direction we're heading. But not happy about the result tonite. I've won this race before, you know, so I know what it's like to have a good night here, and this definitely was not a good night.
