Allmendinger Flying Best Buy Insignia Colors At Summer National Karting Race
Shawano, WI July 16, 2010-- With a never-ending desire to be behind the wheel and racing, AJ Allmendinger is not one to take a vacation.
So as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series enjoys a weekend off before next Sunday's Brickyard 400, AJ Allmendinger won't be heading to the lake for some rays. Instead, he'll be sporting the Best Buy Insignia colors as he returns to kart competition in the SKUSA Pro Tour SummerNationals at USA International Raceway in Shawano, WI.
AJ will be running the 125 shifter kart at the Wisconsin track as he keeps the competitive fires burning up north.
"I just don't do vacation. So I'm really looking forward to the weekend. It's fun to go back to where I started and race in a little more relaxed environment than what I'm used to. But it's still very competitive," said AJ, who carried a bad mood for several days after his last karting outing at Homestead didn't go as well as he had hoped. "It is fun, but it's also all about winning. Sometimes you can get caught up and forget how much fun being at the race track can be."
The chance to race was one that AJ couldn't refuse, and with his background in the sport firmly based in karting, it is a little like coming home as he heads north.
"This is what I grew up doing and what I love, so for me this is my kind of get-away," said AJ, who raced for Paul Tracy Karts before eventually becoming (and beating...) him as teammates in Champ Car. "Plus, this is some great training for me. I am in the gym for hours, every day. And still, I get in a kart and it beats me up so it's very good for my physical training. And, it's just a blast. Benny Moon will be up there racing the TAG so it should be a fun weekend."
AJ will be back in NASCAR Sprint Cup action next weekend as the huge Brickyard 400 kicks off a string of races to solidify spots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Allmendinger has been posting consistently strong results in the No. 43, and will look to pick up where he left off at Chicago with another strong outing over the yard of bricks.
