Wade Lee earns provisional pole.
Apollo Motorsports drivers Lee and Dowler lead after first qualifying session.
VANCOUVER, BC - Calgary's Wade Lee has earned the provisional pole for Saturday afternoon's CASCAR Super Series race at the Vancouver Molson Indy with a lap of 1 minute and 24.428 seconds around the 12-turn Concord Pacific Place temporary street circuit. Second fastest, with a time of 1:24.761, was his Apollo Motorsports teammate Kevin Dowler, in his Quality Care Taurus.
Lee turned only three laps in the Friday afternoon session, after setting the fastest lap on his second tour of the circuit. That Lee has been quick in Vancouver is no surprise. The BC Ford Dealers Taurus driver is a talented road racer and is competing in the same car that Dowler drove to an incredible 'back to front' victory, just weeks ago, in the Toronto Indy.
Dowler, who owns Apollo Motorsports, opted to drive a different car in Vancouver. The Edmonton, AB racer will pilot the car he took to victory lane at Mosport Int'l Raceway, earlier this season. With two wins to his credit this year, Dowler is the Super Series' winningest racer.
Current CASCAR Super Series points leader Don Thomson was third fastest, with a lap of 1:24..885, in his Home Hardware Chevy. Ron Beauchamp's Mopar Parts Intrepid is fourth (1:25.438), ahead of brothers Jeff (1:25.609) and Jim (1:25.615) Lapcevich.
The CASCAR Super Series teams return to the track at 8:25 a.m. Saturday morning for their second and final half-hour qualifying session. Several drivers believe that the pole for the feature race could still be in play, given that the cooler morning track conditions could produce faster speeds than Friday's afternoon qualifying session.
The combined times for the two sessions will set the grid for Saturday afternoon's main event, at 3:00 p.m.
