Turner Finishes Top Five Again

Barrie, Ontario: Al Turner had tire problems late in the Mac Tools 250 at Cayuga Speedway on Saturday night but battled back to a great fifth place finish. This is the first time in many years the CASCAR late models have run under the lights at Cayuga Speedway.

Turner set third quickest time during the late afternoon qualifying session and lined up on the grid behind pole sitter #60 Ron Beauchamp Jr. and outside front row starter #4 Don Thomson Jr. for the 250 lap race. Thirty-two cars took the green flag for the start of the Mac Tools 250 at 9:00 p.m. in front of a large crowd of racing fans. Turner settled into third and ran with the lead group of cars during the early stage of the 250-lap race. After pitting for tires & fuel just before the half way mark Turner brought the Blue Streak Intrepid back out in 6th place ready to go to the front. He made some nifty moves and took over the point position on lap 148 where he stayed for the next seventy-six laps. With the handling going away on the car, Turner fought to hang onto the lead but on lap 224 Don Thomson Jr. pounced underneath him to take over the front spot. When the caution flew a few laps later Turner headed for the pits and new tires. During the final twenty laps he was able to pass several cars to post a strong fifth place finish, gaining valuable points in the Castrol Super Series Point Standings. Unofficially they remain in third, nineteen behind the second place team of Kerry Micks.

Podium finishers 1. #98 Dave Whitlock 2. #4 Don Thomson Jr. 3. #64 Mark Dilley. Whitlock's win makes for eight different winners in nine events in 2001.

The CASCAR teams now prepare for the western swing of their season after a weekend off that will take in Calgary's Race City Motorsports Park and the Vancouver Indy event. The Blue Streak Intrepid will be making appearances in the Calgary area starting on Tuesday August 21st prior to the Mopar 500 race weekend at Race City. Including the Pit Stop Competition at the Eau Claire Market on Thursday August 23rd at noon and then on to Schanks on McLeod Trail for the Castrol Charity Challenge.
