Turner Victorious In Vancouver
Vancouver, BC: Al Turner in the #76 Blue Streak Intrepid cruised to the win in what has to be his biggest victory on Saturday in the CASCAR 100 from the Molson Indy Vancouver. This was event number eleven on the twelve race CASCAR Castrol Super Series 2001 tour and the first time the CASCAR late models have appeared at this prestigious event.
Turner who has one previous road racing win to his credit set the fastest time of the day during Friday's first qualifying session. The Blue Streak Intrepid drivers blistering time of 1:25.465 was almost a half a second quicker than second place qualifier Kevin Dowler who crossed the line at 1:25.909. A heavy overnight rain washed out the second qualifying session on Saturday morning and the teams were forced to cruise the track on their rain tires.
The start of the CASCAR 100 would see outside pole sitter Kevin Dowler get a head start on Turner and he would take over the lead for the first eight laps. However after sizing up Dowler over several circuits, Turner made his move going into turn one on lap number nine and when they exited the corner Turner had effectively taken over the front spot. The Blue Streak Intrepid remained out front for the remainder of the way and cruised to victory under the third caution of the day. An elated Turner said after the race "This has to be the biggest race we have ever won. I am thrilled for everyone on our team especially Rick Decher, V.P. & Gen. Mgr. of Blue Streak who has a customer program going on here this weekend. My whole team have worked very hard for this and its great for them as well. Our entire trip to Vancouver has been terrific."
Podium finishers included 1. Al Turner, #76 Blue Streak Intrepid 2. Kevin Dowler, #35 Ford Quality Care Taurus 3. Kerry Micks, #02 Tim-Br Mart Taurus. Turner remains unofficially in third in the Chase for the Castrol Cup heading into the final weekend of racing on Sept. 28 -- 30th at Delaware Speedway just outside London, ON.
Race Weekend Notes: Al Turner and his son James along with Rick & Marge Decher from Blue Streak had the distinct pleasure of joining Rick Hansen on Wednesday for a day of sturgeon fishing. By all accounts it was a great day. Turner's weekend could not have been better, winning the pole, the CASCAR 100 event and posting the fastest lap of the race. There were three cautions for a total of six laps.
