Milverton, ON: Scott Steckly in the AW Millwrights/Erb Group Pontiac had another strong run in this the second event on the Castrol Super Series 2001 tour with an eighth place finish. This caution plagued event saw Steckly run as high as fourth but some late race trouble with lapped cars cost him a better finish.
Steckly raised some eyebrows when he came out late in the qualifying round and posted fourth fastest time of the day with a 14.438 just slightly slower than pole sitter D.J. Kennington's time of 14.253. Seventeen cars beat the previous CASCAR record at this track set by Earl Ross in 1997.
Steckly's strategy for this event was unchanged, as Peterborough is known to be notoriously hard on race cars. Starting on the outside proved not to be as bad as they expected as Steckly was quickly able to drop down to the inside line at the start. Late in the race with lapped cars lining up on the inside on restarts, the AW Millwrights/Erb Pontiac driver found himself in the wrong lane and was forced to let several cars by before falling into line behind them. After the final restart of the night Steckly was able to pass two more cars and bring the Pontiac across the finish line in eighth. After the race Steckly said, "I am reasonably happy with eighth place but felt we had a strong fourth place car tonight. We were able to run up there all race but lapped cars caused us some problems. I am looking forward to Mosport in two weeks as we always run strong there."
Steckly remains in the Chase for the Castrol Cup tied for fourth in the point standings. The next event on the schedule for Steckly and the AW Millwrights/Erb team will be at Mosport Raceway on June 9, 2001.
