Stratford, ON: Scott Steckly took his 22 Racing/Erb Group/AW Millwrights Pontiac to the podium on Sunday with a third place finish in the running of the Great Canadian 300 at Delaware Speedway. The CASCAR Late Models made their final appearance of the season in event 12 of the Castrol Super Series with Don Thomson Jr. winning the coveted National title.
Steckly equalled a career best finish here on Sunday, with his prior podium third place coming at New Brunswick in the 2000 season, The 22 Racing Pontiac was strong all weekend, but a great qualifying effort of seventh quickest was negated when it was deemed by the CASCAR technical officials that they were to light. The Erb/AW Pontiac then lined up last in the first of two 100 lap qualifying races. Steckly put on a great show with his move to the front and by the time the checkered flag fell the 22 Pontiac was in seventh.
The #22 Erb Group/AW Millwrights Pontiac lined up on the grid for the start of the Great Canadian 300 in fifteenth position and Steckly set about his usual strategy. It was going to be long race and equipment failures and attrition would likely be high with forty-one cars taking the green flag for three hundred laps of racing. So patience again would be the order of the day. The 22 Racing Pontiac dodged several on track mishaps early in the race and some great pit strategy found them in the hunt for a podium finish. Steckly and the #1 Canadian Tire Chevrolet of Peter Gibbons waged a battle for several laps but the 22 driver was unable to get by him and when the checkered flag fell an elated 22 Racing Team had their best finish of the 2001 season. A happy Steckly said after the race "I cannot thank all my sponsors enough. They have been behind us 100% this year through all our troubles with engines. My team and family members are also to be given a great deal of thanks, as without them none of this would be possible either. My car worked great all day and I was hoping I might have something for D.J. and Peter at the end but Mark Dilley caught up to us and we had all we could handle holding him off but we are incredibly happy with a third here. I would also like to thank Wendell Erb and his customers and guests for coming out today to cheer us on.
Podium finishers 1. Peter Gibbons #1 Canadian Tire Chevrolet 2. D.J. Kennington #17 Castrol Intrepid 3. Scott Steckly #22 Erb Group/AW Millwrights Pontiac.
