Monday May 22, 2000: CASCAR's 1999 Eastern Rookie of the Year and Stratford area racer Scott Steckly and the #22 AW Millwrights/Erb Transport Pontiac team qualified 13th for Sunday's Mopar 250 at Delaware Speedway Park. Steckly's time saw them just come up short of the top twelve who are locked into the grid for the start of the race event. By going on and winning their heat race Steckly earned the thirteenth starting position, their best career CASCAR start.
Steckly ran consistently in the top fifteen for the first hundred laps while taking a patient attitude. By lap 138 with some of the front-runners having made pit stops Steckly had moved up to the third position. During the middle portion of the race there were several caution flags and during one of those the #22 Racing/AW Millwrights Pontiac team made their pit stop for tires and fuel. By Lap 150 they were again in the top 12 and looking to continue to move up when a racing incident took them out of contention. The front of the car was badly damaged and required replacement of the rad but the Steckly crew had him back on the track several laps down where they went on to finish in the 26th position.
A disappointed Steckly commented after the race "We had trouble during practice but everything came together for qualifying and we were really pleased with the way the car handled during time trials and the heat race on Saturday night. I really felt comfortable in the car on Sunday and we were just biding our time and being patient about moving up positions with 100 laps to go when we got taken out. We are really looking forward to the next event at Cayuga and hopefully we will have a strong car again."
The next event on the 22 Racing/AW Millwrights/Erb Transport Pontiac teams agenda is the Parade and Pit Stop Competition to be held in Hamilton Ontario Saturday June 3rd and then off to Cayuga Speedway for the Ford Quality Care 250 on Sunday June 4th.
