Steckly Places Thirteenth At Mosport
Stratford, Ontario: Scott Steckly in Erb Group/AW Millwrights #22 Pontiac made the best of their bad luck with a thirteenth place finish in the National Fast Freight presents the Exide 250 at Mosport on Saturday night. Steckly who has posted two top six finishes in his previous two events at this track hoped for another top performance but it was not to be on this night.
The 22 Racing Pontiac was not as good in qualifying as they hoped as they notched the fifteenth fastest time overall with a 22.575. Pole sitter Neil Fair with a 22.160 did not beat the track record of 22.092 set by Peter Gibbons last year.
The Erb Group/AW Millwrights driver hoped the addition of fifty extra laps to this race would prove beneficial to him in the end, as they are very good at saving the tires for the final few laps. However during a caution period early in the event, the cars in front of Steckly checked up and he was unable to miss the car of Jim Lapcevich in front of him. This caused extensive front-end damage and the hood was pushed up so high Steckly had difficulty seeing. When the next caution flew he raced into the pits and the crew removed the hood but they would resume racing one lap down to the leaders. Bad luck didn't stop there thought as Steckly radioed his crew and told them he had a right front tire going flat and he was coming in under the green for a new one. Upon entering pit road the tire came off the car and he coasted down pit road with the right front suspension dragging. Upon inspection it became apparent that the rim actually broke and it wasn't a flat tire as first thought. He resumed the race still only a lap down and continued on to take the checkered flag in thirteenth place.
Scott Steckly & the Erb Group/AW Millwrights Pontiac unofficially reside in sixth place in the Castrol Super Series Point Standings. The next event for the 22 Racing Team will be at the Mosport Road Course on Saturday & Sunday June 23rd & 24th
